Where to Go
What to Bring
Aim to be comfortable: clothing should be comfortable and are quick drying or self wicking.
Other things to consider when coming to dragon boat paddling:
- BOTTOMS: Shorts, track pants, leggings are all fine options
- TOP: T-shirts, muscle shirts, or anything that is again tech material or light (avoid cotton – it gets heavy when wet and take a while to dry)
- SHOES: water sandals, crocs, light weight trainers can all be worn, expect them to get soaked
- WATER BOTTLE – you will get thirsty, so bring a water bottle with you
- SUNSCREEN – outdoor sport so protects your skin. FYI: The sun reflects off the water and can double burn you!
- HAT/BANDANA – Should definitely be worn to keep the sun or rain or wind off your face
- SUNGLASSES – To protect from sun and water glare, don’t wear designer glasses as they may fall off your face, into the water, and be offered to the reservoir gods.
Paddles, boat, and safety equipment are provided.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need experience to try dragon boat?
No. Many people start dragon boating as complete beginners.
Do I need to be in shape to paddle?
No. Dragon boating can be physically demanding, but like many team sports, people start at different fitness levels. Fitness will grow with experience.
Do I need to know how to swim?
No, you do not need to know how to swim, although comfort with water is helpful. We will provide you with a personal flotation device (life jacket) for safety.
Will I get wet?
Probably at least a little! Dragon boating is a water sport and you should expect some splashing.
What if I don’t want to race?
That’s completely okay! People paddle for recreation, fitness, community, time on the water, and lots of other reasons. You can paddle with us even if you do not want to race.
